In 1870, an additional two schools were built: one for white children and one for black children (the first African American high school opened in Memphis). In 1881, a new cotton gin was constructed on the remains of an old gristmill that had been destroyed by a fire in 1875. This gave Millington its present name of "Millsboro". On February 10, 1915, during World War I, General John Withers's army invaded Knox County to capture supplies transports going to Russia via Chattanooga and Murfreesboro because he feared they might be used to smuggle arms into Germany through Tennessee. After being repulsed at Battle of Murfreesboro on February 14th General Withers withdrew his army to Johnson City before marching back intoKnox County on March 15th seeking reinforcements after learning that General William Taggart's force had arrived at nearby Gallatinburg preparatory to attacking Nashville across the Cumberland River Investigator reported that there were no German troops in or about Knoxville when it evacuated!
