Millington is located on the Cumberland River and falls within the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Millington was founded in 1817 by John Weldon and his brother-in-law Jonathan Dunham. They named it for Samuel Mills, who had died two years earlier in aexplosion at a nearby mine. The first store in Millington was built on the corner of Second and High Streets, serving as an early trade center for what would become Shelby County. In 1860, Millington was added to the Union along with Springfield and other townships in Greene County when Tennessee became a state. Over time, many residents of Millington chose to move to Chattanooga or other cities due to its growing industry and economic opportunities. In 1920, voting citizens approved annexation by Chattanooga as part of a larger effort to create more suburban areas throughout Tennessee.. One of Millington's most famous citizens may be Don Meredith, who represented Shelby County on the Tennessee General Assembly from 1961 until his retirement in 1978. Meredith also served as mayor of MilledTON from 1969-1973 and 1977-1981; he has since been honored with numerous awards including being inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame (2006). He currently resides in Memphis where he continues his public service career as president emeritus of Cooper University School Of Business

Millington was founded in 1814 by settlers from Calloway County, Kentucky and moved to its present site in 1821. The name means "a place where flour is ground." The first settler in Millington was James Gentry, who arrived with his family on November 6, 1814. Mr. Gentry's father had come overland from Kentucky some years earlier and located a cabin near what would become Millington. When James Gentry met his wife and children here he decided it would be a good place to settle down and start their own farmstead. He named the cabin White Sands, after his father's old home in Calloway County; however before long other settlers began arriving and soon enough the name of the town changed to Millington because that is all that remained of White Sands when they abandoned it for new land west of Nashville. Milton Walthall became one of the early farmers in Millington and built an orchard on what is now Gay Street just north of Main Street in 1825-26 (the orchard still stands today). He also raised hogs and pigs which were local delicacies at that time as well as being used for powering sawmills which were then very importantto early Milledtons because they did most of their trading with Clarksville overland during those days before there was any railroad service through those parts! Milton Walthall also operated a gristmill on South High Street which turned out flour for local baking shops until 1865 when milling operations were shifted to nearby Decatur City due to cheaper prices available from that location! In 1830 David Humphreys started farming east of Milledton on land later developed into Lebanon Hills housing development including several homesites now within walking distance of downtownMILINGTON today! A post office called Red House was established at this location on January 10, 1830; however mail only traveled between Clarksville (then known as Greeneville) and Lebanon Hills (now Germantown)and not between Milington/Red House & Nashville! In 1840 John Thomas established another grocery store here along with 2 cotton ginnery buildings now standing along East Broadway phosphate shaft tourney field Old Mill Site Today - one dating back to 1800 In 1847 Samuel Hartsfield organized an Agricultural Society here giving rise to what would eventually be called Agricultural Hall – today’s Sam Rayburn Municipal Auditorium !! On July 4th lots numbering 219 were sold by lotteriesnearby inthe villageof Antiochfor $1 each ! This area now forms partof Thoroughfare neighborhood!! In 1850 Jno Patton opened up Patton’s Drugstore Hereafter becoming oneofndepottersinNashville !! By 1860 more than 20 stores had been erectedHereto supportthe burgeoning cityscape !! By 1870 many manufactories had been set up including 3 brick kilns – manufacturing items such as bricks & tile etc!!!! All these businesses generated much wealth & social activity throughout the late 19th century but stopped operations following prohibition during WWI!!! Production resumed somewhat thereafter but ended abruptly due mainly to competition from tractor production!!!!! Most recently some interesting retail ventures have taken place such as online retailers like Overstock.com & Ebay

However, many of the original mills remain extant today and continue to play a significant role in local economy.
