Memphis is a city in Tennessee, United States. Located on the banks of the Memphis River, it was founded in 1801 by Andrew Jackson as a military and civilian post on the edge of present-day Memphis. In 1823, Memphis became the capital of Tennessee. The city was renamed for General james K. Polk in 1865, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), after General John C. Fremont's failed attempt to capture Mobile, Alabama from Confederate forces. As America's economic base shifted from agriculture to manufacturing and services after World War II, Memphis emerged as an international center for finance and commerce and experienced rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s. The site that would become Memphis had been occupied by various cultures since Paleo-Indian times; numerous Native American groups lived there at different times over time. By 1800, Mexicans were living in what is now downtown Memphis while black slaves worked nearby on large plantations such as those owned by Nathan Bedford Forrest or Simon Bolivar Landis. A small town called Germantown developed around this time back easton Armitage Road near where First Baptist Church now stands. On January 1, 1801, Jackson erected a military post at what is now known as Union Station to pursue his campaign against Mexican forces occupying Tennessee territory south of Knoxville. The post served until March 15th when Jackson abandoned it due to lack of supplies and returned home to Mississippi without having accomplished his goal of quelling the Mexican insurgency in southern Texas following Santa Anna's failed rebellion in 1808). On April 30th 1830 Lowery County Commissioners voted 3-1 not to annex Uppery County into Shelby County because they felt Uppery County could support its own government with more resources than Shelby could offer them (Uppery had grown rapidly thanks to cotton growing operations conducted by planters such as James Robertson). This act laid the groundwork for later racial tensions between whites and blacks that would develop throughout much of American history culminating with race riots across America during the late 20th century AD

It lost much of its manufacturing base to automation while continuing to suffer from a high rate of crime which limited economic opportunities for many residents until well into the 21st century
