In 1796, General Andrew Jackson won his first term as president with help from the Cherokee Nation. As part of this agreement, Jackson ceded lands in what is today Memphis to them in order to keep them out of British hands. The following year, he ordered the burning of a church near present-day downtown Memphis due to its affiliation with the Baptist Church. This event helped solidify Jackson's reputation as a leader who could be counted on to protect his people and property. In 1836, an act was passed which allowed citizens to purchase firearms without having to go through a government-issued license or paying a fee. This event marked the beginning of gun ownership in Memphis. Gun purchases continued to increase throughout the 1830s and 1840s as violence against Native Americans escalated into full-blown warfare. One such altercation occurred on November 25th, 1839 when 10 white men were killed after being attacked by 20 Cherokee Indians at Fort Sumter. This provocation led to months of tense negotiations between both sides that eventually resulted in peace treaties dated December 16th and January 6th, 1840 which ceded most of present-day Shelby County (including Memphis) back to Indian control

By 1830 there were 3100 people living in Germantown, making it one of the most populous villages in America at that time. In 1837 an act was passed by Congress giving Memphis Boroughhood which made it an official city with its own government separate from Shelby County. On December 6, 1871 Memphis became an independent municipality with a population of 250000 residents; more than any other U.S.–city combination before or since then!
