On July 16, 1795, General James Wilkinson surrendered at Battle Creek after leading a successful attack against French forces at that location known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers. After this victory over France, General Wilkinson decided to move his army northeast into what is now Tennessee because he believed that this area would be more fertile for farming than what he had seen west of the mountains in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. He named his new settlement Fort Knox after King George III's fort at Edinburgh which he captured from France during the War for Independence (1775-83). After Fort Knox was built, traders from all over traveled through town to sell goods they had acquired along the Red River near present day downtown Memphis during their brief period as trade partners with Native Americans who lived on or near that riverbank. Early explorers saw what must have been an amazing site for agriculture – alluvial deposits dating back to 5500 years old were discovered nearby! By 1800 there were enough settlers living hereabouts to form a government under charter from Great Britain – this nation’s first municipal government! In 1819 England annexed much northeastern Alabama including parts of Fulton County so as not to lose control over these rich cotton fields while Spain held possession adjacent to Mexico City across Texas/New Mexico border northward into Arkansas Territory where slavery continued until 1865 when it finally ended with Mexican occupation! At about this time Nashville began its rapid growth as a result of advances made by steamboats linking St Louis with points east via Mobile Bayou & Lake Pontchartrain creating open ports on American lakeside communities & riverside towns inland such as New Orleans & Baton Rouge across Louisiana territory then Mississippi Territory before finally reaching Jackson proper within 8 years starting about 1830! This process accelerated due largely to entrepreneurialism among entrepreneurs like Andrew Dickson White “Old Hickory” Jackson who became involved early on (& long continuing) real estate development interests seeking opportunities for exporting raw materials hitherto unknown only through Mississippi River commerce! During Reconstruction following The Civil War (1861-1865), many southern black men rose up against white rule led by Confederate general Robert E Lee in various states throughout Southeastern United States culminating with General Forrest’s march on Atlanta Georgia resulting in Overton Park Massacre on April 14th 1865!!! With Civil War hostilities drawing Toomorrow closer numerous freed slaves flocked into Memphis hoping for protection from Union forces occupying their homes – including women & children!! But things got outof hand quickly when Union troops ordered African Americans not to assemble or leave any public property without special permission!! Thousands were killed or enslaved immediately afterward!!!! Thereafterforth organized Negro militias operated exclusively within themselves???!] This paper will focus specifically upon events leading up to March 4th 1865 which marked turning point receipting international attention Chatham House Conference attendees considered key factor !!

In 1907, Memphis experienced its first major fire when a building in downtown caught on fire. The blaze destroyed many business blocks but also created a sense of community spirit that has continued to this day.
