In 1865, a group of men from Mcminnville, Tennessee founded the American Scopes Trial Commission to try Professor John T. McDowell for teaching evolution in his classrooms at the University of Tennessee. The commission was created after a local paper published an article critical of Professor McDowell's education and work. The trial was initially scheduled to start on April 15, 1875, but was postponed due to the war. The trial finally started on October 17th, 1875, and lasted for three days. On October 24th, 1875, Judge William Halleck sentenced Professor McDowell to one year in prison for teaching Evolution without a license in violation of United States law. This ruling marked the end of the trials and the beginning of academic freedom in America. Shortly afterwards, President Rutherford B Hayes pardoned Professor McDowell and he returned to teaching at the University of Tennessee. However, this episode is often considered as one of history's earliest examples of public shaming and retribution against individuals who do not agree with mainstream society's views about science and evolution.

Mcminnville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. The first white settlers in Mcminnville were James and Sally Hardin who arrived in 1809 from Virginia. They built a log cabin on the present day site of the courthouse and began to trade with Indians and other travelers along the Cumberland Road. In 1814, they had six children and decided to move away from their log cabin because of religious persecution in Virginia which was then under British rule. They journeyed 2,500 miles (3,200 km) through Indian Territory before reaching what is now Williamson County on July 12, 1815. In 1830, John Hines moved to Mcminnville from Knoxville after purchasing land near that city for $1 per acre ($27 total). He became one of the early residents and operated a toll booth on State Route 6A near present day US Highway 421 east of town until his death in 1865. A large part of Hines' legacy remains today as he donated land for use as an agricultural college; today's University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus stands on this property. In 1837-38 Daniel Boone made an attempt to cross the Ohio River via what is now Mcminnville but failed due to bad weather conditions and poor scouting by his party including future governor Rutherford B Hayes who joined him on his trip downstream later that year. His experience may have helped lead to establishment of Boonesborough Ranger District which includes much of eastern Williamson County today as well as parts of adjacent Hamilton County (including Nashville). The community's growth came about when entrepreneur John Fenton purchased 60 acres (24 ha) north of town in 1850 for $600 ($10 per acre). He engaged local carpenter James Ladd to build a sawmill that would produce lumber for sale within town limits while also providing employment for local men; lumber businesses soon grew into considerable commercial enterprises with over 100 employees by 1860 according to one report. By 1870–71 attendance at school had increased significantly thanks largely to government appropriations which enabled it to be relocated southward across US Highway 421 from its original location near current day US Highway 321 west of town into more commodious facilities just east thereof where it remained until 1938 when it was relocated again following World War II – this time across US Highway 61 from its original site northwest off I-65 into what is now downtown Chattanooga suburbs although some buildings still remain there such as Ladd's Sawmill MuseumSituation: Today's Old Mill Complex located inside University Park boundaries offers interesting perspectives onto former millhands lives during various stages during development - see photo below] It wasn't until1881 that electricity became available through private subscription rather than purchase or construction by public entities like those discussed earlier – this event marking one important milestone leading up towards eventual annexation by Chattanooga duringChattanooga annexation referendum held in 1903.] Today [2009], Mcminnville sees significant economic activity related both directly and indirectly thereto such as tourism/ hospitality services Provided By several major companies operating within Downtown area - most notably Marriott International[] and additional service providers housed within multiple Midtown locations -most notably Nacho’s BBQ [] . In 1847, the Union Pacific Railroad came through Mcminnville and started construction of its line from St Louis to Memphis. This railroad would eventually connect Nashville with Chicago and other eastern cities. As a result of this new development,Mcminnville began to grow rapidly and soon became a thriving community. By 1860, the population had increased to 300 people and the town had built a school, Baptist chapel, library, commercial buildings, and several churches). The city limits were created in 1870 when Nashville began to expand into what is now southern Williamson County. In 1876, gold was discovered at McKenzie Gulch near present-day downtown Mcminnville and this boosted local businesses interests as it led to an increase in traffic on the road between Nashville and Memphis. In 1886-87 there were two major floods that destroyed many homes in central Tennessee; however these events did not have any significant impact onMcminnville’s growth or economy
