Mcminnville is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonburg–Kingsport–Bristol, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Mcminnville was Captain David Thompson on July 3, 1795. He sighted what he thought were Indians and ordered his men not to fire because they might scare them away. A few days later he returned with a party of nine men and found that there were no Indian present but he did see some moccasins or booties which he took as evidence that the place had been visited by Indians before him. In 1812 an attempted sale of land in this area led to the Battle of Goodnight's Creek. A group of twenty-five men under Colonel James Gentry fought against thirty-six Native Americans who had set out from Knoxville to purchase land near where Mcminnville now stands. After six hours of battle Gentry’s force was forced back after being overwhelmed by numbers and casualties; only four men including himself survived. This event is often cited as one of the turning points in the American Revolution as it helped create a break between British Canada and America thanks in part to these native uprisings. One important early settler in Mcminnville was Elias Dyer who bought 640 acres (250 hectares) along Devil’s River south of town in 1817 for $4 per acre ($26,000 total). Dyer successfully developed this land into an agricultural center supplying local markets with goods from Illinois until his death in 1865 at age ninety-four years old making him one of the longest livedoutherners ever born outside North Carolina or Georgia until his day Dyer also founded what is now known as Vanderbilt University in Nashville while living here and made many donations to various churches throughout Manchester County such as First Presbyterian Church (now called Christ Church), Methodist Episcopal Church (now called Metropolitan Baptist), (now known as Johns Hopkins Baptist) and even founding an orphanage/orphanage for African Americans which still exists today named Hope House after his wife’s ancestor Hope Coleman whom he married when she was just eighteen years old .
