McMinnville is a small town located in McMinn County, Tennessee. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The name “McMinnville” is derived from the Cherokee word "mcmi-nawa," meaning “a place where corn can be grown.” The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1839 and named after General James McAllister, who served as an officer in the American Revolution and then became a Senator from Tennessee. In 1865, General John McClernand established Fort Henry here to protect settlers traveling through Indian Territory on their way to Kansas City. The fort closed in 1868 and was replaced by Fort Donelson just north of McMinnville. In 1870, local farmers founded what would become known as the University of Memphis (now UT) based on a request from President Andrew Johnson for help with educating freed slaves. Classes began at nearby White Sulphur Springs in 1872 and moved to downtown Memphis in 1876 when Memphis became an incorporated city. In 1916, McMinnville acquired its own post office which continued until it closed in 1920 due to mail fraud allegations against the office’s founder, A C H Hillisbetter. The current courthouse was built between 1928 and 1930 following plans developed by architect Joseph Biddle and contractor Edward Laddiey Jr.. The $30 million project included designs by famed architects Jules Hardinge & Partners as well as George Wooten & Sons of Knoxville who supervised construction work throughout the entire state of Tennessee. Ultimately, only one half of the building was completed before World War II caused extensive damage that required restoration spanning over more than 15 years starting in 1951 under direction of director emeritus Marvin Sargent followed by his successor Alumni StonecutterJMCCLATCHY beginning in 1984 under auspices of UT's College Park Center for Preservation Studies until its closure following Hurricane Katrina on August 25th 2005 On October 5th 2009 UT announced that it will reopen under new management starting February 10th 2010 with a focus on developing student services including online learning opportunities
