Mcminnville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The first permanent settler in what is now Mcminnville was John McMillin who arrived in 1807 from Scotland. The name "Mcminnville" derived from a location near this site on the Cumberland River called "Minniver." John's family took up land here and started growing corn and raising cattle. In 1814, James McMillin, John's brother-in-law, purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land northeast of present-day Mcminnville from David Denny for $10 per acre. This land became known as McMillinvilles Creek Township. James McMillin farmed here until his death in 1848. His son James A., also a farmer and Union soldier during the American Civil War, founded the town of Mcminnville on this tract of land which he donated to the community in 1861. The first school that opened in Mcminnville was an log cabin built by David Dennyshire on what is now Main Street in 1865. This cabin served as both a schoolhouse and wrestling gym until it burned down in 1925. A new school building was erected on what is now Second Street between 1901 and 1903 by Mrs John Hustedtbaugh with help from her husband Julius Hustedtbaugh Jr., who had been born into a prominent local family of farmers and milliners whoowned extensive lands around Knoxville but no schools or mills within miles of their home). Home economics classes were taught at this school for many years before it was replaced byHardin County High School which opened its doors to students on September 15th, 1969/70.. In 1967/68 2nd Grade Mrs Hustedtbaugh’s class designed & constructed our very own addition to her old high school building – “The Black Sheep” which still stands today! Today there are over 350 alumni living & working (& homing!) near & far including some “upstairs” 🙂
