However, Mcminnville’s unique history remains its deep connection to Scots-Irish culture and history. Today, Mcminnville is an historic district that includes over 20 buildings dating back to the 1800s. Some of these structures are still used today and are popular tourist attractions. The origins of Mcminnville can be traced back to 1819 when Captain John A. McKay set out from Glasgow, Scotland on a journey to find new land near Nashville, Tennessee. Heading westward along the Cumberland River he arrived at what is now known as McKinnon’s Landing on July 8th of that year. McKay's settlement would eventually become Mcminnville after he donated land for the community on which it stands today (the current location of McKinnon's Landing). McKinnon's Landing was an important stop for travelers travelling along the Cumberland River during those early days and was also home to some of the earliest businesses in Mcminnville: a cooperage (a type of grocery store) and a millinery shop/factory (both now demolished). From here, traders could purchase goods necessary for their travels upriver or downriver before selling them off at various points along the way – making this area one of seminal importance in early Nashville development! During its early days,McKinnon's Landing was also home to some key residents: Captains John Acheson and David McDonald; Manor House Property Manager James Dooley; Mrs Fenton; Mr Dooley’s Five Sons; Dr J Ransom ; Mrs Ransom’s Sisters; and several other families who made their homes there during those early years."

The Creek Nation had been ceded by the US to Spain in 1828, and slavery was abolished in Texas in 1865. In 1865, Tennessee seceded from the Confederacy and became a state of the Union. On November 2, 1870, voters in Tennessee approved a new constitution that replaced the old one. The new constitution guaranteed suffrage to citizens of all races and provided for a judicial system based on traditional English law. It also set up education and government institutions such as the University of Memphis.
