The original settlers were farmers and their families who took up land in what is now Knox County. In 1830, a school was built in the town which served as a local public school until 1908 when it became an independent school district. A courthouse and jail were also built during this time period. In 1836, a post office was established in the town which remained operational until 1930. During this time period, the townshall (a type of meeting house) was also built which still stands today. In 1881, a fire destroyed most of the buildings within the town including both schools and Post Office. However, many new buildings were constructed such as a Methodist church and Baptist church which remain standing to this day. Additionally, businesses such as Smith's Drug Store or Pritchard's Hardware were established during this time period which continue to operate to this day. In 1900, George Washington Carver moved from Chattanooga to Maryville where he began his agricultural experimentation at his farmstead known as Carver’s Lumberyard on Swann Road near present-day Coliseum Drive South. After years of work culminated with his Nobel Prize-winning carve called “Carvers” in 1906., Carver relocated his family fromMaryville to Tuskegee National Institute (now Tuskegee University) some miles away due to financial difficulties experienced during that time frame).
