In 1863, General John Custer attacked and destroyed a Union brigade underLieutenant Colonel James Longstreet near present-day Chattanooga. After this battle, many soldiers and their families retreated to Old Maryville for safety. Many homes and businesses were built here during this time period including Chilton's Livery stable which still stands today within walking distance of most residents' homes today. The post office at Old Maryville was established on November 15, 1849, with Wm Henson as its first employee. The name changed to Maryvill

They built a house on Chestnut Street and started a grocery store. In 1865, when the United States Civil War began, their store was destroyed by fire. The Stephens family decided to move again and founded the town of Maryville on land that they had purchased from John Sevier in 1868. The town of Maryville grew quickly and soon became a major commercial center in the region. In 1902, the town of Maryville was merged with nearby Uniontown to form the city of Maryville-Uniontown.
