Maryville was founded in 1831 by General James Robertson and his family. The town was named for the Virgin Mary, who is said to have appeared to him while he was helping build a cabin near the town. In 1868, General William T. Sherman invaded Tennessee and burned all of Maryville, except for some buildings used as military barracks. The first new development was a small log cabin, built by Major George Robertson in 1792. By 1829, when Tennessee became a state, timber had become scarce and many settlers began to move into the region to find more land. In 1830, John Sevier donated land to form what is now known as downtown Maryville. By 1850, there were over 50 buildings in downtown Maryville. The first post office in downtown Maryville was established on December 12, 1851. The growth ofMaryville led to the construction of several churches and schools over time. In 1865, large amounts of tobacco were shipped through town and it quickly became an important agricultural center due to its location at the mouth of the Cumberland River. During World War II, Maryville was one of six American cities that submitted plans for Post-War reconstruction. The city's economy grew rapidly after 1945 due to increased jobs in science and technologyirting with explosive growth rates throughout much of the 1990s and 2000s; however, during recent years these trends have reversed as unemployment rates have increased while wages have stagnated or declined
