Maryville is a small town in Tennessee, United States. It is located on the Cumberland River, 10 miles (16 km) east of Nashville and 20 miles (32 km) north of Memphis. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by Scottish settlers in 1814. The first post office was established in 1818. In 1860, Maryville became the site of the Battle of Maryville between Confederate forces and Union troops. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and the death of four Union soldiers. As a result, most residents today are descended from Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived during this time period. Today, Maryville remains an important agricultural community with significant manufacturing capabilities as well as several heavy industry companies that produce products such as aluminum cans and tires. Additionally, there are several restaurants, bars and other businesses that serve local citizens throughout the day or evening regardless of job opportunities or travel plans; making it an attractive place to live and work despite its small population size.
