Maryville is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The Battle of Maryville was fought on November 16, 1862, during the American Civil War, between Confederate forces and Union troops. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and ended the war for the Confederacy. The battle is named after General John Custer who was killed in action. In 1819, General James Knox Polk built a cabin near present-day Maryville and named it Knoxville after himself. A post office called Knoxville was established in 1825, and remained open until1869. In 1830–31, Major James Fisk opened a trading post at present-day Maryville. By 1840, many farmers had settled around Knoxville; by 1850 there were twenty houses in the town site alone. In 1856–57 Nathaniel Bledsoe organized what became known as the Volunteer Cavalry Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers (later to become the 9th Infantry Regiment). He traveled through Chattanooga to look for soldiers to join his regiment but found only men with fear of Indians or illness willing to enlist; he disbanded his unit before returning home Bledsoe then persuaded other Tennesseans to sign up as volunteers for an expedition against Indian Territory under Ulysses S Grant; these Volunteers were also not interested in joining an army against Indians After some disagreements about command structure among his volunteers Bledsoe returned home without any further success With this failure behind him Bledsoe formed another volunteer cavalry regiment from scratch which he called "the Mounted Rangers" On March 4th 1861 he led them into battle against Boonesborough's brigade at First Manassas Junction where they failed miserably .On July 5th 1861 Lt Colonel William Tipton replaced Bledsoe as commanding officer of "the Mounted Rangers".Tipton's brigade attacked Confederate positions near turnpike overpass just outside Maryvill ere junction with Davidson Road leading south towards Pulaski County () resulting in heavy casualties on both sides including Captain John Seymour who later committed suicide after being captured by Union forces while trying to retreat back across Overton Bridge (). Lieutenant Colonel Tipton ordered his men back across Overton Bridge () but when they reached their units they discovered that all their horses had been killed or taken prisoner (). Aftermath Tipton's brigade retreated eastward along Murfreesboro Road (), suffering heavy losses (). At nightfall on July 6th 1861 Federal forces surrounded Knoxvill
