Maryville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 575 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded by General James Robertson in 1815 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The first school was built in 1833 and the first church in 1835. In 1870, Maryville became the county seat of Williamson County.
In 1925, Maryville became one of 12 townships that formed Knox County. On December 1, 1930, Knox County merged with Davidson County to form Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
It withdrew from TVA on September 15, 1935 and reverted back to Williamson County control two days later under state government control. In 1960, Knox County merged into Marshall County and its name changed to Maryville again. The current boundaries were established when Marshall county split off from Memphis-based Anderson Counties effective November 3, 2013.
On December 1st of this year, it was announced thatKnox county would become an independent city once again for all intents and purposes see: "KnoxvilliansAnnounceCity Split" This decision comes as a bit of surprise as Maryville has been trying unsuccessfully to get their own city hall since at least 2007.
The mayor has said they will fight tooth and nail until they have their own building but understand that without city status there may be less funding available for things like infrastructure projects.
