There was a Gun Club in Maryville formed in 1892 which still meets monthly. The first true shotgun range opened up in Maryville by Joe & Florence Cox in 1907. It was located on Commercial Street and became known as “Joe’s Place”. The gun club members would take their shotguns to shoot at barrels set up along each street curb. After World War II, there started to be more handgun ranges opened up and the use of shotguns diminished. In 1967, Harry Payneopened his own gun range on South Main Street which has been open ever since! It is now considered one of the most successfulgun ranges around! During World War I,Maryville played an important role in supporting military efforts throughout the region; many local businesses donated goods or services to help war-time veterans find employment or support their families.
