By 1830, the town had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Maryville became one of the Confederate states. The Battle of Maryville took place on November 11th, 1861 and it resulted in the death of many Union soldiers. The town was abandoned soon after the battle and most of its residents fled to Lebanon County or other areas in northern Virginia.
