In 1865, two men named John Fetterman founded a paper mill inMaryville that became one of the leading mills in Tennessee. The mill produced paper products such as newspapers, tickets, and labels until it closed in 1951. In 1907, the Maryville Baptist Church was founded on property that had been donated by Mrs. Anna Belle Hardtkeisel Smith. The church served as both an education center for young women (the first female teacher inTennessee) as well as a place for services such as weddings and funerals until it closed its doors effective June 1st, 1965 due to financial difficulties). On July 25th 1912 local resident J W Slaughter opened up his grocery store at 301 S Main Street which would become one of the most successful grocery stores east of Kentucky – serving customers from all over Eastern Tennessee! butchering animals on site also made this business very profitable!
