Maryville is a small town in Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis- Nashville- Tudor, TN metropolitan area. The area that now Maryville was first settled by Scotsmen in 1792. The town was named for General James Wilson Mary (1763-1836), an American Revolutionary War veteran and signer of the Declaration of Independence who later served as a brigadier general in the United States Army. In 1819, Colonel John Sevier erected a log cabin on what is now State Route 169 north of downtown Maryville. This became home to many early settlers and played an important role in developing the town into its current form. By 1827, there were eleven homes in town and it had a population of around 100 people. In 1835, General James Wilson’s great grandson, General William Wilson (1796-1868), moved his family from Lexington County, Kentucky to what is now Maryville after purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day downtown from David Dudley Fielding Adair for $10 per acre ($1/km²). He renamed the land “Wilson County” after himself and began construction on what would become one of America’s most famous cotton plantations – Ralston & Company – which would eventually produce more than 150 million pounds (66 million kg) of cotton cloth each year between 1865 and 1915! The townspeople were so excited to welcome their new arrivals that they built a large blacksmith shop and tavern on Main Street opposite today’s civic building within two years! In addition toGeneral Wilsons plantation holdings there were also extensive crops grown such as corn, peas, beans etc., which supported local families during this time period; however much has changed since then!

Maryville was founded in 1821 by James Robertson, a native of Canada. The town grew rapidly, and by 1836 it had a population of 2,500. In 1868, Maryville became the capital of Tennessee. The town was named for Mount Moriah, which is located adjacent to the town in the hills north of the city limits. The first settler in Maryville was John Biddle, who arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin on what is now Broadway Street. By 1830, Biddle had married Sarah Orchard and their family moved to what is now downtown Maryville from their original location on Maple Road northeast of the present day municipal building. In 1831, James Kipp (a native of Scotland) purchased land within what are today eastern blocks A and B on Main Street between College Avenue and West Broad Street; this area would become known as North Park Square. Kipp built his home there before moving his family to what is now West Market Square in 1834 where he continued to live until his death in 1863. In 1840, Nathaniel Cook bought 160 acres (62 hectares) east of downtown Maryville from Levi Coffin for $2,100; this property would become known as South Park Square after Cook's death in 1850. Cook developed it into one of the most important industrial areas in central Tennessee during the antebellum period with mills running continuously until 1865 when they closed due to competition from larger rivals downstream in Ohio Valley . The first post office at Maryville was established on May 1st,1841 by Wm Hargrave with Elisha Goodloe serving as postmaster for six months prior to its closure due to financial difficulties on October 15th that year. On December 1st 1840 Samuel Latham opened a general store at 607 N Main St which functioned as an early breadwinner social service center for those living nearby while also selling goods such as millinery and calico products . In March 1861 Colonel James Robertson established Camp Roberts south of downtown Maryville under commandant Major General Isaac Smith with orders to protect settlers encroaching upon Indian Territory west of Memphis – this area eventually became known as East Memphis . Robertson also began construction on a large brick courthouse/ jail which opened its doors February 11th 1862 just east of downtown MaryVILLE under Captain John Silliphant.. This structure served as county courthouse until 1896 when it burned down making way for new County Courthouse Annex which stands still today across Frome Boulevard from Old Main University campus along side Joe Gibbs Federal Building
