In 1861–1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army through Williamson County to invade Chattanooga after defeats at First Bull Run (20 October 1861) and Second Bull Run (27 March 1862). After Confederate General Robert Ewell captured Union headquarters at Murfreesboro on 7 April 1862 – thanks to Union artillery fire – Confederate General Beauregard ordered his cavalry to pursue Grant's retreating army across seven counties into northern Davidson County. On 10 April 1862, Union forces destroyed several bridges over the Little Maury River near present-day Maryville while they were attacking Confederate forces entrenched along a ridge leading downriver towards Antioch Road; this action greatly slowed down Confederate reinforcements who were seeking to cross over to join Grant's force upriver. On 15 April 1862 US Army Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest sent Lt colonel Augustus Trowbridge with five companies of infantry Regiment H Troop 1st Cavalry under command of Colonel John Pemberton southward along Antioch Road towards Grants location; upon reaching Grants location Trowbridge found him dead with a gunshot wound to the head; Forrest took control of H Troop 1st Cavalry which continued pursuit across nine miles (15 km) into northeastern Davidson County before turning back due to lack of support eastbound along Antioch Road - resulting in three killed/ten wounded soldiers plus four horses killed/six injured soldiers reported asmissing within fifteen minutes following battlefront engagement In 1865 John Atherton organized a new military post called Camp Floyd which served as garrison for troops moving westward during Reconstruction following Reconstruction governments collapse nationally around 1865 Camp Floyd later reverted back to civilian ownership again between 1870-1920 but still bears federal government name given it currently resides within Johnston Co., TN . In 1920 Camp Floyd reverted back once more back into military hands again becoming known as Fort Knox among nearby civilian inhabitants once more
