In 1936, due to World War II shortages of materials for war production withinJohnson Countythe countycourthouse building was sold to Memphis City Schools which used it until 1969 when it closed downand been razed to make room for a new school district headquarters complex which still stands today In 1909 Methodist Episcopal clergyman Wm Burchouse established a theological seminary called Southern University which later became Vanderbilt University In 1916 Presbyterian minister Dr Atherton organized an agricultural college named Tennessee Agricultural College In 1938 Tennessee Valley Authority constructed dams across the Cumberland River flooding much of downtown Maryville including most of its original buildings After World War II community development efforts were initiated with assistance from USDA Rural Development programs including housing construction projects through United States Home Loan Association known as "The Housing Program" although these projects are no longer extant Maryville returned to its pre-war form when it elected mayor Jerald Pruitt in 1978 followed by incumbent Stan White in 1982 both men serving until 1990 when term limits were set effective November 3rd . These mayors worked together developing plans for revitalization such as creating an arts center; increasing tourism; expanding retail opportunities; growing transportation options; creating economic opportunity opportunities for citizens through educational initiatives such as job training program offered through local businesses or cooperatives ; establishing several parks including one adjacent to downtown renamed Parkview Park during time period where park restoration efforts were funded primarily by private donations rather than tax dollars . Today many aspects continue unchanged or have been augmented such as Arts & Cultural Center currently under construction focused on showcasing local art thru programming/events/lectures etc.; city wide recycling program now having curbside collection facility open 7 days per week with more than 5 thousand residents participating along with over 100 truckloads collected each month; library system expanding into former bank building adjoining residential areas currently under construction consisting of two floors totaling 232 feet long with its own dedicated parking garage perfect for larger events/ exhibitions etc.; ongoing development at Parkview Park resulting in renovation/expansion project completion in fall 2020 incorporating botanical gardens addition featuring 4 hectares (10 acres) of rainforest complete with waterfall and pond Additional highlights include recent expansion into former vacated quarters adjacent to Interstate 40 outside OFDOT control making this area contiguous annexation becoming possible finally providing all current annexed areas full public education facilities similar to those enjoyed by neighboring municipalities ... [Whilst] remaining largely intact overall architecture certain enhancements have been made reflecting increased use since incorporation while reducing impact upon original structure particularly around Town Hall (now City Hall) having stately wood frame design maintaining character unique unto this day
