In 1812, the first white man to set foot in what is now Maryville was Andrew Jackson. The town was founded by General James Shelby in 1796 as a fur trading post on the Tennessee River. In 1815, General Sam Houston moved his army through the area and renamed it for himself, later adding the words "Maryville" to its name. In 1820, Anna White established a school in what is now downtown Maryville. In 1830, Methodist Bishop John Crouch built a Gothic Revival-style church in downtown Maryville. The town experienced declining fortunes until World War II when production of aluminum began nearby and led to an increase in trade and population. The city was incorporated as a municipality on November 3, 1951. On January 1, 1984, Maryville became part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area after winning approval from voters via referendums.
