In 1865, John Wesley Hardin founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in Maryville and became one of its first missionaries. In 1876–77, he built a church on what is now Second Street and Main Avenue. Over time, other churches were established including Presbyterian (1899), Baptist (1915), United Methodist (1927), Lutheran (1945), Reformed Dutch Church (1965), Jewish Congregation B’nai Israel (1981) and Methodist Episcopal Synod United States Zion congregation in 2003 which amalgamated with another congregation established in 1955 called Beth Elohim Evangelical Orthodox synagogue also located within walking distance of Maryville’s central business district.. The growth of tourism during prohibition era brought much traffic to local businesses such as banks and restaurants; however this prosperity did not last long as prohibition began to be repealed one by one until all states had legalized marijuana starting with Tennessee in 2013 following similar laws passed throughout most U S . Maryville was founded in 1819 by Captain James Robertson and his wife, Anne. The early residents of the town were Presbyterian missionaries who set up a mission station in what is now downtown Maryville. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Tennessee River to navigation in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of about 100 people. By 1850, Maryville had become an important textile center due to its location on the river and its ability to produce cotton high-quality enough for export. The town's growth slowed after 1860 when railroads arrived in the area, but resumed later in that century when oil came into prominence as a source of revenue for towns along the interstate highway system. In 1978, Maryville became an incorporated city.
