Since then,Martin has seen several incarnations including: 1) A new location about 10 miles east of Knoxville on I-75; 2) A small town adjacent to Lookout Mountain on U.S Route 421A; 3) A larger town located off Interstate 75 just outside of Martinsburg; 4) A small rural community situated between Lookout Mountain National Park and Winchester County; 5) Another smaller rural community located northeast of Martinsburg off State Route 41E

The two towns experienced significant growth during the 20th century as cotton mills closed and people moved to the area for jobs and education; both towns lost some of their significance after World War II when state-owned forests were acquired and developed in those areas instead. The town's first school was built in 1814 on what is now State Route 9W (later US Highway 421). The town's first courthouse was built in 1836 on Main Street between Main Street and Broadway. The original post office opened in 1839 on Clinton Avenue between Broadway and State Route 9W (later US Highway 421). The Martin Lumber Company operated a sawmill here from 1903 until 1914; it supplied lumber to many municipalities across Tennessee including Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Johnson City, Decatur, Nashville, Greeneville and Prestonsburg[1]. After being shuttered for several years following World War I,[2] the mill reopened in 1923 as a sawmill run by Southern Pulp & Paper Company which continued operation until 1984[3].Martin also had a grocery store called Hi-Tone Mercantile from 1928 until its closing around 1980[4],[5]; this store played an important role in local cultural life because it served as a gathering place for friends before going out to eat or purchase goods.[6] Martin has seen several changes over its history: starting out as primarily agricultural [7], gradually becoming more industrialized due to its proximity to larger cities such as Knoxville,[8][9] then experiencing rapid growth following World War II with numerous new businesses emerging[10], culminating with increasing suburbanization beginning around 1990[11][12] which has led to limited employment opportunities within the town limits[13]. Despite these challenges, however, Martin remains one of most vibrant small communities located near major markets throughout Tennessee[]14].
Martin County was established in 1821, and named for General Andrew Jackson. It is one of the original counties of Tennessee. The county seat is Nashville.
