Martin was a small town in the United States during the 1800s. It was located in what is now Knox County, Tennessee. The community was founded by George Martin on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1796. After being burned down twice, Martin built a new settlement on the site and named it after his father, Thomas Martin. The town grew rapidly and by 1828 it had a population of 350 people. In 1831, Martin became one of thirteen towns located within present-day Knox County when it was organized as a county. The town continued to grow and by 1839 had a population of 1,500 people. By 1860, however, Martin had shrunk to just 375 people due to factors such as increased cotton production and other economic changes in the region. However, its historical significance remains today because it is home to one of only two remaining historic churches in Knox County – the First Presbyterian Church which stands today on land that once housedMartin's courthouse and jail (and also served as a local school). Martin was also known for its annual agricultural fair which attracted many tourists from nearby Nashville during summertime. The fair typically featured demonstrations of agriculture techniques such as haying or planting crops; livestock sales; dance performances; food contests; and music concerts. In addition, there were often poetry readings and discussions about current events at the courthouse square where visitors could listen to speakers from various walks of life discuss topics such as abolitionism or social issues such as race discrimination or child labor. The last significant event associated with Martin occurred in 1895 when it merged with neighboring Frenchtown into what is now downtown Knoxville. At this time all three communities developed into an important commercial center due to their proximity to major railroads and other businesses located in downtown Nashville at that time
