Martin is a small town in the lower Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee. It is located on the banks of the Clinch River, about 20 miles east of Knoxville and 10 miles north of Chattanooga. Martin, Tennessee is a small town located in Jackson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Martin were Native American tribes who lived there before European settlers arrived in the area in 1797. The land that now makes up Martin was part of an original Cherokee Nation farmstead called Moccasin Bend. As early as 1802, a group of white men from Chattanooga traveled to what is now Martin to purchase 640 acres (260 hectares) of land northwest of Chattanooga for $1 per acre ($40 per kilometer). The Burr family purchased the land in 1810 and named it after Andrew Jackson, then president of the United States and future governor of Tennessee. In 1831, Burr donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to Holyoke Seminary for religious instruction and used it for school until 1870 when it became known as Burr Academy. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded eastern Tennessee and captured many people and property including Moccasin Bend which he renamed Fort Pillow within weeks. On December 12th 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Pillow with more than 1,000 men using cannons and infantry while heavily outnumbered by Union forces led by Major General Ulysses S Grant; however they were successful in repelling his attack and driving him out of the fort on December 15th 1861. With Fort Pillow destroyed – one of few Confederates strongholds remaining – Private First Class George Edmunds USMC volunteered to garrison it while his unit was mustered out on February 8th 1862 just days after its capture by Union forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman; EDMUND’S HANDICAP made him one of only two soldiers from this unit still alive today after over three years fighting at war’s end.. Martin grew slowly through agricultural production until cotton ginning techniques came along in the late 1800s which allowed farmers to produce large quantities at lower costs than before due to innovations like interchangeable parts manufactured by Eli Whitney & Sons company facilitated greatly increased yields from slaves working Uncle Sam’s fields during this time period- something that would have huge implications for all Americans during postwar Reconstruction era following Civil War due largely because slavery had been abolished nationally but southern states continued passing laws restricting voting rights based on race- leading eventually to Jim Crow Laws further limiting African American access to education and employment opportunities throughout most southern states following World War II
Martin County was founded in 1818 by James Martin, a Welshman. The county seat was at Chattanooga. It grew rapidly due to cotton farming and became a major center of population during the antebellum period. The county was organized into districts in 1850 and organized as a state within Tennessee in 1859.
