The town grew rapidly after it became known as a center for coal mining and cattle ranching in Hardin County during the early 20th century. In 1911, it became one of the original townships within Knox County when that county was created from part of Hardin County. It remained an unincorporated municipality until 1951 when it incorporated as a city under hardid administrative rules enacted prior to that date by then-Mayor Don Boren with input from then-County Commissioners Artie Huggins and Eugene Klingenberg Sr.. Today, Martin hosts many cultural events throughout the year including art shows, music concerts, agricultural fairs, festivals and more which contribute to its unique character. The first white settlers in Martin County were Levi H. Smith and his family who arrived in 1813. The county was named for General Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. The first courthouse was built in 1822 and the first court house was built in 1829. In 1840, a post office was established and the name changed to Martinville in honor of General Joseph Martin, an American general during the Mexican-American War who also served as governor of Tennessee. The population of Martin County increased from 962 in 1830 to more than 7,500 by 1860. During the Civil War, many soldiers fromMartin County fought on both sides and some died while fighting. Today, there are over 1,000 residents living inMartin County and it is one of the most heavily populated counties within Tennessee.
