Martin is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Martin was Ezekiel Thomas who built a log cabin on the site of what is now the historical downtown area in 1819. A post office called Martin was established in 1827, and by 1840 it had a population of ninety-six. In 1861, when Tennessee seceded from the United States, Martin became part of ConfederateTennessee and many residents chose to remain loyal to their new state. However, most residents returned to Unionism after the war ended. In 1903, John Pritchett opened a general store and restaurant near present day Fourth Street and High Street in what is now downtown Martin. The store soon became an popular tourist attraction with its wide variety of goods. Pritchett donated his land for what is now Middleton Place Cemetery which served as a burial ground for locals and visitors until 1984 when it was changed to Memorial Park due to concerns about soil erosion from development nearby. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as cotton became an important commodity in Tennessee. In 1851, Martin had a population of 350 people. By 1865, it had shrunk to 25 people. The community disappeared after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
