By 1840, Dickey had built two cotton ginners and four other mills around his mill which produced up to seventy-five thousand pounds of cotton each month. At this time, there were also twenty dwellings and three churches in town. In 1847, Jno Clements purchased 640 acres south of town from Dickey for $5 per acre and began to build an all-wooden courthouse and jail which became known as "Clements' County Courthouse". This structure still stands today as one of the most important buildings inMartintown dating back to its original construction date In 1865, Isaac Hardin sold sixty acres east of downtown for $10 per acre to Benjamin Fenton who began developing it into what is now downtown Martinville with six stores/laboratories/carpeting business etc.; new housing; Masonic temple; Baptist church; school (grades K-12); blacksmith shop;and two hotels/motels were built: First National Bank Hotel (now reopened as Live Oak Lodge) and Second National Bank Hotel (now rebranded as Renaissance). Eugene Wills acquired 442 acres west of downtown from Fenton for $2 per acre in 1871 resulting in Wills Vineyards being established on that land including vineyards producing sparkling wine such as Chardonnay and Zinfandel
