In the early 1800s, Martin was a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. It was located on the Misery River and had a population of around 100 people. The town was abandoned in 1853 after the nearby Morehead City Railroad passed through it. Martin has been mentioned several times in history, most notably in 1825 when General Andrew Jackson visited the area while campaigning for his campaign to be elected president. While he did not stay at Martin's hotel, he is thought to have stayed at one of its neighbors, Hickory Log Cabin Hotel. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Union troops near Martin and burned down many homes and businesses. The attack destroyed much of what remained of the town and left it with only a few buildings remaining by 1865. Martin is now a ghost town that is only open to those who are specially invited by its Preservation Society for tours from 10am-4pm each day during October- April (weather permitting). However, there are no alcohol or food restrictions and visitors are free to wander about without any particular destination in mind. If you do go there expecting something different than what you will find, be prepared for an eerie experience as most of the buildings have been completely destroyed or were dramatically changed over time - making it difficult if not impossible to tell where they once stood.
