Martin is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Martin was John Martin who arrived in 1802. The town was named for General James Martin who fought in the American Revolution and died at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The current post office was established in 1824. A school and store were built in 1827 and are still standing today. In 1865, the first railroad station ever opened up in Tennessee were located here with goods coming from Chattanooga and other parts of Georgia andAlabama. In 1870, a sawmill and grist mill were built on what is now Main Street by J.B Hickey which continued to operate until it closed down in 1922 due to changes in technology; however, earlier this same year an additional grist mill also went into operation on Court Street near present day First Baptist Church (now known as First Presbyterian). A community center was built on what is now Second Avenue between Main Street and Court Street around 1976 which housed various churches until it closed down again around 2001 due to lack of use; however, an addition has been made to this building which houses businesses currently including a restaurant/cafeteria as well as a library/museum whichopened its doors on October 12th 2013 via donation from local entrepreneur Steve McDevitt aka “The Mayor’s Club”

Martin was a small town located in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The community was founded on October 12, 1819 by John Martin and his family. The town was named after the Battle of Martin's Gap which occurred in 1755. The first post office in the community was established on December 1, 1824. On July 7, 1840, the population of Martin totaled 100 people; however, it had decreased to 50 by 1850. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through the community while invading Kentucky; as a result of this event and other factors, many residents chose to leave for Arkansas or northern Missouri. On November 15th 1921 during World War I veteran James Waddell died at age 87 years old from a heart attack at his home in Martin; he is buried at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington Heights Illinois. On September 10th 1961 during Hurricane Andrew damage caused $105 million worth of damage to buildings and infrastructure within about an hour radius around the town center including most homes There were no reports of any injuries or fatalities from the storm but some power outages persisted for weeks afterwards Martin has experienced several name changes throughout its history including: Johnstown (1819-20), Fort Smith (1840-41), Nashville (1861-65), Clarksville (1875-76), Carthage (1879), Springfield (1900), and finally Martinville (1920).

The name is derived from Mount Carmel, which is located in centralMartin County. In 1830, Martin became a dependency of Nashville and was chartered as an incorporated municipality. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Nashville seceded from Tennessee and formed its own state; Martin remained within it until 1865 when it became a part of Mississippi. In 1898, following the end of Reconstruction in America, Martin rejoined Tennessee as an independent city with its own government and police force. After World War II, however, it declined into obscurity until rebound efforts led to restoration in the early 21st century Martin has experienced many economicidents including: agriculture (especially cotton), manufacturing (particularly automobiles), tourism (including golf courses), energy production (both oil and gas), retail trade (especially clothing stores)
