In 1861–1862 a group of men known as "The Volunteers" worked together to improve living conditions for residents of nearby Decatur Junction by purchasing land and building homes that they could use as their own residences while still maintaining some connection to their old home in Memphis. When word got out about this effort, donations started flowing in from all over Tennessee so that similar projects could be carried out throughout the county seat. The population of Martin grew rapidly during this time as people commute into downtown Nashville or nearby cities for work each day. By 1960, there were over 1,000 residents living inMartin County alone! Today, Martin is home to a variety of businesses and services that help support its growing population including government offices (including County courthouse), medical clinics (including one within walking distance of the courthouse), shopping malls (including several large regional mall districts) as well as numerous arts and cultural organizations which have helped make it an important center for creativity and culture throughout Tennessee Valley region
Martin was founded in 1814 by Andrew Martin and his family. The community sprang up around a small creek that ran through the town. His father, John Martin, built the first store in the town. In 1830, Andrew Martin donated land to become a school district. In 1835, he also donated money to build a church. The first pastor of the church was Rev. George Witherspoon. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1847, the town had a school and post office. In 1850, Andrew Martin died and his wife took control of the business operation in their memory. She continued to run it until her death in 1865. Reverend Driscoll became pastor of the church in 1870 and served until 1880 when he moved to Nashville to become an administrator at Vanderbilt University School of Divinity where he taught from 1884 until 1898).
