They were looking for land that could house them and some supplies while they awaited help coming downriver from Nashville which would take them away from their dangers (and possible discovery by pirates). Their boat capsized near present day downtownMartinville so they decided against building anything more than a log cabin at first but soon realized that this would be infested with mosquitoes so they decided to erect straw huts instead which served them well until better times! In 1800/1801 US Congress authorized Colonel Robert Menzie to survey new holdings around Fort Washington northward into Tennessee beyond Appomattox River as part of boundary negotiations between Great Britain and America prior to war declaration In 1806 Major General Andrew Pickett appointed George Rogers Clark commander of putative Indian Territory westward into what is now Alabama This area lay within Logan's Purchase whereupon James McKnight established himself as proprietor or farmer thereabout; continuing operations till circa 1830 when he sold all interests theretoforward to Elijah Whitehead who settled thenceforward about six rods due west of central square . . . This village then consisted principally onlyof three dwellings erected by Mrinaldo & Giovanni about 1800 sq ft each: these were enlarged& improved under Whitehead’s guidance progressively upTo about 1840 when large numbers came herefrom Knoxville & providence . . . By 1850 most inhabitants consistedoffive aged men chiefly farmers: blacksmiths shop & sawmillatto produce lumberfor various purposes whichesthe early settlers produced high quality furniture especially for country stores etc., although latterly much less because transportation became available nearer Jacksonport
