It burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and used as the county courthouse until 1957 when it was replaced by the current building. The town has three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1893), Second Baptist Church (founded 1912), and Methodist Episcopal church (founded 1889). The oil boom of the 1920s brought development to Martin and its surroundings; today, many of the buildings from that time are still standing including a hotel called The Ambassador which once housed General Motors Corporation's Nashville operations. In August 2014, local media reported that Martin had applied to become one of eight US cities selected to become part of the new European Union headquarters called "Brexit". On 22 October 2014, Mayor Donny Lamb announced that he would not seek reelection in 2018 due to health reasons; his successor Rocky Barnes took office on 1 November 2014 with plans to pursue a bid for city status within what had been previously known as Brexit 2020
