Like many other small towns during the 19th century, Martin experienced major changes due to industrialization and immigration from Europe. In 1906, when Congress passed Act No. 90–620 (the National Industrial Recovery Act) which created housing projects throughout Appalachia in order to create new jobs for rural Americans during the Great Depression, Martin saw its biggest growth yet as families from nearby Shelbyville started moving into the town for work in these new factories and businesses. He named his new settlement "Booneville" after his father-in-law Colonel Robert Forney (1768-1820), who had helped him purchase land back at Kentucky's Cynthiana Plantation near Knoxville.. -It wasn't long before Booneville began trading with other parts of TN as well as KYand WVfor goods such as timber, slate rock, salt water fish shipped downriver from Chattanooga via boat,, slaves brought upriver from plantations along the Cumberland River,, etc.. -By 1830 Booneville had become quite prosperous thanks to its growing trade which helped attract more settlers including some prominent citizens like Judge John Lidell (1796-1861) who donated land for schoolroomSsn later renamed MLK High School). Judge Lidell also served as Mayor From 1840 To 1845) . -Lodell's donation allowed for construction of MLK High School which opened its doors on October 6th 1850 followed by classes starting on November 1st 1850..(note: This date would have been significant given that King attended Grays Institute nearby during this time) .. – At this point Clarens Pike/SR 171 traffic started flowing through MLK heading eastbound towards downtown Knoxville while southbound traffic headed towards Lebanon Rd./SR 8
