Manchester, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Chattanooga Area. The community was founded in 1849 by Methodist missionaries as a stop on their journey from Nashville to preach. The original name for Manchester was "Fenton." In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, General Nathan Bedford Forrest became military governor of Hardin County and renamed the community Manchester to honor Forrest's victory over Union forces at Battle of Franklin. In 1865, when hard times hit the United States in the early 1860s, many people deserted Manchester because there wasn't enough money to buy food or pay for necessities like shelter and healthcare. This caused a lot of problems for future generations who had to deal with abandoned homes and communities. For example, one group of people who left Manchester were known as the "Manchester Gals" because they cookedasseradish (a type of pickled peppers) and ate it all during their time away from town. After they returned home in 1870, they started selling that sauce back east again under a new name - Olde Manchester Sauce Company - which continues today! Many businesses have been located in Manchester since its founding such as Dixie Brands Inc., State Farm Mutual Insurance Company and Hindman Factors Incorporated. Homebuilders such as Lennar Corporation built some of the most popular subdivisions in Chattanooga during this time period including River Oaks subdivision and Brookside development. Other notable landmarks include First Baptist Church (founded 1912), Smithson Valley School District #2 Library (1927), Nash High School (opened 1959), Presbyterian church (1868), Griggs Ford Dam No 3 near present day Garden City Township Road 521 (1936) and First National Bank Building dedication plaque February 5th 1972 Celebrating 50 years since opening Banking history begins here!
