The name Manchester comes from two places: Manasseh and Moneta.Manasseh means "place of understanding," while Moneta means "place where eggs are cooked." In 1791, General James Robertson built a log cabin on the east fork of the White River in present-day Manchester for his wife and four children. Over time, other families followed suit and many more homes were built in what is now Manchester. Tourism has played an important role in helping to maintain Manchester's downtown core since it was first developed as a commercial area during the early 1800s. Today, numerous restaurants and bars line Main Street between University Avenue and Broadway. Manchester began its civil rights movement history when African Americans formed the local chapter of SNCC in 1963 after watching angry white mobs march through their community protesting integration into larger American cities such as Nashville or Memphis!. When Jesse Jackson visited Manchester in 1984 he observed firsthand how segregated Chattanooga had become - Mobile Gas Department had made up most of downtown's business district; all but one restaurant closed down because segregation still remained! After Jackson's historic speech at Morehouse College aboutAfrican Americans' legal right to vote (and subsequent protests throughout America), demonstrations took place throughout Hardin County against Jim Crow segregation laws throughout 1964-1968! In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th this year (2008), Mayor Donny Deutsch created designated “Downtown Plaza” which will be located near Main Street & Broadwalk to celebrate women working within our community both past/present & future!! This plaza will include artwork by local Artist Kelley Newell as well as refreshments for Women!!!
