By 1865, there were over 50 businesses and 2 churches in Manchester – making it one of the most active towns in Hardin County at that time. AsKnoxville grew larger and more developed around it, so did Manchester’s role as a manufacturing center for southernTennessee and beyond during the late 1800s and early 1900s. This boom gave rise to some infamous names associated with this period: “the Steel Capital of America”; “the Fertile Crescent of Industry”; “The Cotton Capital of Tennessee”; “The mills that built America”; etc., but also helped create some cherished memories like streetcars running down Main Street (now US-27) going back to 1892 or Jim Reeves singing on stage at First Baptist Church (now Weisman Chapel) back in 1907 while everyone else was watching baseball matches on TV! In recent years however even hard times have not caused much change or decline within Manchester – despite experiencing significant cutsbacks by local government due to budget deficits throughout much of 2009-2012*. Despite this setback*, things are slowly starting to pick up again with new businesses opening up especially along busy Commerce Street which has seen several restaurants and bars open up recently including Karma Kites* BBQ & Brew Pub*, Wellesley Pizza*, The Fidelity Bank branch* (*opened in Fall 2012). In addition to major employers such as banks *and* manufacturing plants such as aluminum smelters *Manchester has also become known for its arts scene - home to several well-known theaters including Second City Theatre (founded 1951), Pemberton Hall Playhouse (founded 1952), Olde Hickory Playpen Theater Company (1962), Triple M Radio Theatre Company (1973), Southern Illinois University Carbondale's School of theatre arts & design†(*opened January 2014*) - all while still remaining an vibrant community filled with people from all walks of life who enjoy their local food IGA store located just blocks away from downtown!
