Lewisburg is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Knoxville and 13 miles (21 km) west of Nashville. In 1860, when Kentucky became a Confederate state during the American Civil War, Lewisburg elected George Hines to be its first mayor; Hines served until 1863 when he resigned to join the Union army as a lieutenant colonel. In 1865–1868, while he was mayor of Lewisburg, Hines supervised construction of the prestigious Cumberland Gap Railroad across Tellico Plains from Knoxville to Chattanooga through which white northern farmers shipped goods manufactured within slave-worked plantations southward to markets north of Memphis and Louisville Slugger baseball teams sprang up throughout Kentucky’s bourbon belt: “a new commercial center for an entire region that hitherto had been largely agricultural” (Heinrichs 2002).
