Lewisburg is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis– Shelby County metropolitan area. Lewisburg was founded in 1859 by Colonel John Lewis and his family. The first post office in Lewisburg was established on February 14, 1859, and was called "Union". The name "Lewisburg" was given to the town by General James H., Carroll during the campaign for Heidelberg seat in the United States Senate in 1857. The first school opened in Lewisburg on October 12, 1859. The school district that included LewisBURG burned down on July 16, 1860 while teachers were tending to their students; all but one teacher were killed or injured. The only survivor returned to teach at Webster School until it closed in 1931 because of budget cuts. In 1865 Rev Alexander Campbell organized a Presbyterian religious group known as the Campbellites which purchased land east of town from Colonel John Lewis and began construction of what would become known as Campbell's Chapel (now Mount Carmel Baptist Church). This chapel remains an important center for worship today and has been used by many denominations including Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians and Lutherans since its creation. It also became home to one of America's earliest agricultural colleges - Vanderbilt University - when it bought land adjacent to present-day Central Middle School for use as an agricultural college campus back in 1886-87 In 1902 new schools were built south of where Central Middle School now stands: First Baptist Church (now Mount Olivet Baptist Church) and then Park View Methodist EpiscopalChurch (later Bethel Methodist EpiscopalChurch). After years of neglect both churches reopened after major repairs/updates costing millions of dollars completed within 10 years! In 1938 First Presbyterian Church merged with Park View Methodist EpiscopalChurch creating Parkview Presbyterian Churches Incorporated which still exists today along with numerous other affiliated organizations like Missionary Baptist Association (MBA), National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), Southern Baptists Convention USA (SBCU), ect... Today Lewisburgh continues to be a vibrant community full of life & faith!
