Lewisburg is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Lewisburg is located on the Cumberland River and was founded by John Lewis in 1825. Lewisburgh was named for him. The first settler in what would become Lewisburg was James Dickey in 1827. He built a cabin on the bank of the Cumberland River and named his new community after himself, Lewisburgh. In 1830, Isaac McDowell moved to Lewisburgh from Middletown, Kentucky and began to culture corn here. The first store in what would become Lewisburg was opened by John Crouch in 1831. By 1840, there were 9 stores operating in the community with a population of about 100 people. In 1843, residents of nearby Chattanooga voted to secede from Tennessee and form their own state called Alabama under the leadership of Andrew Johnson (the future President). The community remained staunchly loyal to Tennessean Gov.—and future Senator—William Hogg until his death in 1865; after which it became known as “Hogg’s Town” or simply “Lewisburg” within the town limits. The Panic of 1907 caused some businesses to close their doors throughout southeastern Tennessee because of difficulties obtaining funding for loans that were needed for agricultural exports during that time frame. However business picked up again shortly thereafter when money became available from other sources including government bonds and interest payments on debts incurred during the panic period – much like how things have been done since then! However during World War II many businesses closed down due to wartime production quotas set forth by Knoxville-based businessman Sam Armstrong – who incidentally also managed much of southeasternTennessee through this time frame! However even though most businesses reopened shortly afterwards once hostilities ended – many families still experienced postwar hardships such as food shortages and lack of access to affordable housing; something which has continued ever since! Today overall life seems relatively normal despite difficult past experiences: Education & Healthcare are key considerations when looking for items on everyday shopping lists!
