The community was founded in 1879 by Captain John Lewis and his wife Bessie Lewis as a small agricultural village on the banks of the Cumberland River. By 1880, Lewisburg had grown to include a school, store, and two churches. The townspeople were so successful that they decided to rename themselves after General Ulysses S. Grant's home state of Illinois (Lewisburg being one of twelve towns in what would become Cooke County). In 1891-92, the town built a new courthouse and became an official city. In 1907-08, they added a park which still functions today as their central square. In 1916-17 when World War I began with Germany invading Belgium and France (the European war), many people from Cooke County came to fight for America; including Captain John Lewis who returned home to help build up the country's military forces before eventually dying in action during World War I at age 59 years old while leading American troops into battle against German forces near Antwerp. His wife Bessie also served in World War I but died young at the age of 24 years old from pneumonia brought about by her service overseas. After World War I ended, many people from Cooke County decided to stay in their homes and businesses rather than move back outside of Tennessee because they felt that this was their "home" now that America had been saved! With all these people living there permanently it made for some close-knit relationships between everyone – even though there remained some differences within our community such as race or religion! This lasted until around 1970 when most everyone either left or moved away again due to various economic conditions throughout Cooke County like oil refineries opening up downstate which caused high prices for goods bought here versus prices back east where manufacturing still took place! It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area and forms a section of the East Tennessee Valley Authority (ETVA). The town started as a small post office in 1853 named after Confederate general Leonidas Polk. Lewisburg's first store opened in 1861. A new courthouse was built in 1865 and served as the county seat until it was destroyed by fire in 1896. The current courthouse was completed in 1937 and became home to the Jackson County Courthouse Museum from 1978 to 1984. In 1868, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Lewisburg while he was on his way to visit troops fighting against Sherman's army near Chattanooga. After spending time at the town hall, Grant ordered all citizens to take off their hats when they saw him walk through town square – an act that has been cited as one of his most famous moments during his presidency. In 1898, grocery store owner John Fenton donated land for what would become downtown Lewisburg – one of only two such donations ever made by a businessman to downtown Cincinnati during its history. In 1906, Governor Don Blythe gave Lewisburg its first street name – McAllister Street after Sheriff James Witherspoon McAllister (1848-1924). Some local residents proclaimed July 4th "John Fenton Day" in honor of this early pioneer entrepreneur who helped make Lewisburg what it is today; however, many residents still celebrate July 4th as America's birthday due to its association with John Fenton alone rather than American history overall! In 1924, Mayor Mabel Ladd founded The Ladies' Home Journal which published its first issue that year inside the newly constructed State Capitol Building on Main Street just west of US 41/SR 511/Merritt Parkway north of downtown Chattanooga!
