Lewisburg is a small town located in the Eastern Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 5,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lewisburg were French Jesuit missionaries who established a Mission in 1793, and it was still under Jesuits until 1814. The town was named for General David Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution and later became Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. In 1798, Major James Robertson built a log cabin on the site of present-day Lewisburg as a stop on his journey southward from Kingston, Kentucky to become Brigadier General in command of newly organized Tennessee Volunteers during their abortive attempt to cross over into Georgia. The first permanent settler in Lewisburg was John Sevier (1765-1837), who arrived with three families from North Carolina early in 1801. He erected a large frame house on the corner of Brooks and Alcorn Streets about two miles east of wherepresent-day Lewisburg stands. From Sevier's settlement several other settlers soon appeared; among them were Ebenezer Goodloe (1799-1856), wife of Drury Willsgood (1792-1868), George Washington Hardeman (1800-82), Abraham Henschel (1802-84), Jacob Harpham (baptized Feb 6th 1800 [age]), Nicholas Buckner(baptized Oct 12th 1800 [age]), Solomon Lovejoy(baptized Nov 3rd 1800 [age]), Elijah Parish Jr.(1675-[May 10th 1821]), Levi Morton(1774-[Apr 9th 1830]), Elias Higginbotham(1786-[Aug 21st 1831], natural son of Capt[en] Jesse Higginbotham)(died Aug 28th 1840) and James Lane(1800s). Other early residents included John Cramer(1800s?), Willis Greenough(1810s?), James Pritchardgallop([John J.] Pritchardgallop[Oct 8 th 1814 - Mar 25 th 1888]) also known as "Pritchard." In 1819, when Congress authorized westward migration by state militias during the Mexican–American War, Wilkinson lobbied hard for Lewisburg to be selected as one of such settlements; he persuaded many local politicians to support him including Mayor Anthony Beal* and Judge Isaac Hawkins*along with Colonel William Oates*, future Lieutenant Governor James Krieger*and Congressman Asa Key*. On November 4th, 1819 White Horse Ferry landing at what is now called Pryor Bridge connected Lewisburgh with Johnson City making it possible for people passing through both towns to get supplies and know about US military activities near Confederate territory.*On December 1st Samuel Chase opened up an inn/museum at present day Market Square which served as both community center and store until its closure around 1870. A school was started up by Rev[erge] A[lbert] Smith but closed down within a few years due largely to financial difficulties caused by changes throughout eastern Tennesseezonation.*A post office operated from October 14 th , 1800 until May 10 th 1870(*the date on which East Tennessee would become West Tennessee*) when mail operations were transferred to Johnson City.*The first real business venture undertaken by either party happened circa October 15 th 1850 when Josiah Wadsworth opened up his blacksmith shop *on Main Street between Highways 494 & 500*. Wadsworth continued operating his business until 1865 although he had no handcrafting skills whatsoever [*he actually did quite well selling nails]. However much like today's businesses there were initially constraints placed upon Wadsworth's operation: Firstly he could not sell goods directly to consumers unlike today where companies may offer reasonable shipping if they order more than $50 worth OF PRODUCTS]. Secondly he could not open outside while buildings within walls were patrolled by hired soldiers under threat of arrest if they didn't produce goods or documents required for purchase [*]this situation changed somewhat beginning around 1860 when Wyatt Earp founded Wild West Bank & Trust Company which allowed merchants inside buildings without fear that their inventory might be seized]. Finally prior thereto there existed only one store per block []although this began changing starting around 1830 because larger stores began opening up adjacent to homes.] finally acquiring Post Office Building Number One in 1865.]Today Main Street features various small businesses clustered together along one side while Powell River Boulevard runs perpendicular across front giving views out onto downtown Lewisburg *As you drive down Powell River Boulevard you can see signs advertising properties such as vineyards, golf courses etc., hinting at how things have changed since 1850.]One significant change that has occurred since then is that residential areas have transitioned from single family dwellings intomultiunit housing developments dubbed "blacksmith condos" [] currently home primarilyto blue collar workers commuting into downtownLewisburg each weekday morning]; however continuing Downtown business remains an important facetof many residents' lives]. In additionvirtually all schools within walking distance (*approximately 5 blocks*)of downtown are public schools supported BY THE CITY AND TAXES ARE PAID FOR BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT}; nevertheless there are some private elementary/middle schools located nearby.) Today most citizens live close enough together that they interact regularly through various forms OF COMMUNICATION INCLUDING LAPTOP MOBIES!] While numerous aspects have changed since then including technological advances*, overall life expectancy has remained relatively constant*: Life expectancy increased steadily throughout Reconstruction period reaching 73 years by 1900* before decreasing slightly during World War II (#73 ± 2 years) followed by increase starting around 1970 (#79 ± 3 years). job opportunities continue To improve with recent expansionsofthe Chattanooga metropolitan area; however despite these positives life satisfaction rates remain high (>80%).) Lewisburg, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. Lewisburg has been inhabited by people of European descent since the 18th century. In 1786, John Sevier and his family settled in what is now Lewisburg. They were the first permanent white settlers in what is now Hardin County. In 1815, John Sevier's son, James Sevier founded a post office in present-day Lewisburg. By 1830, many other families had settlements here as well. The name "Lewisburg" wasderived from Sir Lewis appearance on a map in 1785 and it took its present form around 1840 when General Andrew Johnson moved his headquarters from Nashville to this area following the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. From 1840 until 1865, Lewisburg was part of Johnson territory known as Fayetteville District No. 2A which included all of Hardin County except for the portion east of the Cumberland River which formed Campbell County (later Robertson County). In 1868–69, after Johnson's presidential election victory over Andrew Johnson Jr., he decided to move his headquarters back to Nashville and replaced Fayetteville District No. 2A with Nashville District No. 3A including Lewisburg within that district effective November 3rd 1870 The first schoolrooms were built near wherepresent-day Henderson Street and Main Street meet in 1850 In 1892–93 a cotton gin was built on current day Elm Street just south of Courthouse Square In 1914–15 construction began on Parsonage Road which became Sixth Avenue today In 1945 two factories were destroyed by fire: One operated by Ford Motor Company at 6200 East Market Street and another operated by Armstrong Rubber Products at 8600 North Sixth Avenue
