When Lewisburg, Tennessee was founded in 1793, it was part of the Cherokee Nation. The town's first settler, John White, arrived in 1794 and named his farm "Lewisburg." In 1802, the United States acquired Lewisburg from the Cherokee Nation and renamed it for General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. After Wilkinson's death in 1836, the town passed to his son and namesake John Wilkinson Jr., who served as mayor from 1847 to 1850. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman set up a military encampment here and called Lewisburg "Forts Henry and Philip" after two of his generals. In 1976–1977 there was an outbreak ofleukemia at Community Hospital;[1] however Mayor Pugh responded quickly by ordering all restaurants inside the hospital closed for nine days so that chemotherapy could be given to patients free of charge. Lewisburgh experienced significant growth following its incorporation as a city on July 1, 1870; within ten years it had reached 100% non-white population with over 3300 citizens black or African American along with 400 white Anglo-Saxon Protestants living there also! At its peak as an incorporated cityLewisburgh had more than 3000 citizens and 500 businesses! However due to race riots which occurred throughout America during this time period all African Americans were ordered out of cities including Lewisburgh where they quickly dispersed throughout rural areas across central Tennessee without any prior warning or notice! This order led to social unrestrained violence against innocent civilians which drastically increased crime rates throughout those rural areas such as those surrounding Lumberton even though most members of these communities did not support or condone such practices! Overall this episode has been widely condemned both domestically and abroad as an example demonstrating just how easy it is for certain groups to achieve power without having any legitimate concern for anyone else!!
