Lewisburg, Tennessee is the county seat of Davidson County and the largest city in its county. The population was 78,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in the central part of Tennessee on the Cumberland River. The first white person to live in what is now Lewisburg was Hugh McCulloch who settled there in 1794. He was a surveyor for General James Robertson and built a house on what is now Broadway Street. In 1801, John Fenton established a post office here and named it after his father-in-law, Colonel James Robertson. The town site changed hands several times until it passed through the hands of another family before being sold to David Humphreys in 1827. Humphreys renamed it Lewisburg after his home state, Kentucky……….Lewisburg’s rapid growth during this time can be attributed to its location on one of two major transportation routes linking Nashville with Chattanooga and Knoxville In 1840, General Prentice Morton founded Morton Manufacturing Company here which became one of the most important companies in Tennessee during that time………………………………………..In 1855, Cooke Manufacturing Company moved from Morristown to Lewisburg…………………..In 1865, Richards & Sons Lumber Company arrived from Boston……………………………………….The first store opened here by J.W. Richards on November 8th 1865
The Lewisburg area was founded in 1795 by General James Robertson and was named after him. The town was originally located on the north bank of the River Cumberland, but it moved to its present location in 1825. In 1868, the town became a county seat and remains so today.
