In 1860, John Witherspoon formed a partnership with Jeptha Butterfield and began trading goods between Carbondale and Clarksville along what is now Main Street. The late 1800s saw some significant growth within Lewisburg when new businesses began cropping up such as groceries store Richardson–Fenton Grocery Store (later renamed McAfee) along Kentucky Avenue; post office - Adair Post Office; Blacksmith Shop & Forge; hardware store - Hardware House; restaurant - Mrs Pettibone's Cafe; blacksmith shop & forge - Smithy's forge & hammer emporium; school - First Presbyterian School (1865-1968); church - First Presbyterian Church (1865-1968). These businesses attracted residents who wanted choices available close by without having to travel far or leave their homes! It wasn't until after World War II did things start slowing down within Lewisburgh again though – this time due largely to recessionary conditions brought about by wars overseas instead of natural disasters like floods or earthquakes! After World War II came an era where many residents chose not to return home because they felt there weren't any opportunities here for them – choosing insteadto establish themselves elsewhere in Hardin County!. However, some brave souls decided to stay put despite difficult times including Harry Silliman who operated a grocery store fronting State Avenue from 1951 until his death in 1978! Today much has changed both inside/outside ofLewisburgh since those heady days during the 1950s when its all you could hear outside your window!!! On July 1, 1906, hard times hit Lewisburg when production on local cotton plantations ended and many farmersouts went out of business; this led to increased competition for jobs among other small towns in Hardin County which resulted in several changes to Lewisburg's charter including increasing its size from 1003 residents to 3000 residents; also included giving it more powers such as bribery of township board members not to pass ordinances that would reduce their voting privileges).
