The first binocular business in Lewisburg was established around 1820 by John Dickson and his son James Dickson. At that time, binoculars were used for navigation and surveying. Today,binoculars are used for a variety of purposes including hunting, fishing, bird watching, and military applications. The Lewisburg Land and Improvement Company was organized in 1876. It developed land in Lewisburg, including the current site of the company headquarters. The first building on the lot was a log cabin, which became the company's main office. The company promoted itself as a "businessman's business." In 1898, it built a two-story brick office building that still stands today. In 1903, the landowning family of James Hargrave donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) to the city of Nashville for development as a downtown area. The Hargrave family also donated $5,000 to help finance construction of the new courthouse and jail in Lewisburg. In 1907, Lewisburg voters passed an ordinance establishing a public library. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as Hargrave Hall at 515 Main Street. The hall was used until 1951 when it was moved to its present location at 601 Main Street. In 1912,Lewisburgh installed streetlights for the first time in its history.
Lewisburg, Tennessee is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Middle Tennessee. The population was 3,457 at the 2000 census. Lewisburg is named after General Ulysses S. Grant, who served as President of the United States from 1868 to 1872 and as Commander-in-Chief of the Union army during the American Civil War. Today, Lewisburg is a sleepy little community that retains much of its rural character and charm. The history of Lewisburg begins with two families: the Polks and the Wades. The Polks immigrated from Ireland in 1814 and founded what would become Lewisburg on a farm nearpresent day Lebanon County. Mr. Polk died young in 1828, leaving his wife Anna to take care of their children Mr. Wade and five daughters: Mrs.. Gadsden (1829-1912), Mrs.. Clinch (1830-1910), Mrs.. Henson (1832-1911), Mrs.. Applewhite (1834-1920)andMrs.(baptized Margaret) Lee (September 17, 1835). In 1840, Anna married Colonel John Sevier III and they moved to Nashville where he became an important political figure in TN politics before dying in 1865 while serving as Governor of TN under Andrew Johnson. After Colonel Sevier's death, Anna raised her four children with her second husband Sam Jordon until their deaths combined in 1893 when she turned eighty years old giving birth to her last child – James Ford Waddell – only eight years old at that time! One by one each family left for various reasons during those early days: James Wade went off to college; Addie Gadsden married into another powerful family; MargaretLee married a preacher; Henson took up farming; Applewhite married again but this time it was within ten months after getting engaged so she could go back to school; finally Lee met Drury Horsecock who offered her work on his plantation if she would come back home for several weeks every year to teach him modern medical techniques! She did this for three years before moving away again due to health concerns but returned permanently after Drury bought land close by which he built a hospital/infirmary called “The Valley” which still stands today! In 1861 when Confederate troops retreated towards Knoxville following their unsuccessful attempt through Chattanooga Russell Shelby decided that he too should move westward fearing secessionist activity within his own county! He purchased 4 miles east of present day Lewisburg along what is now US 71 just outside Of Clarksville Kentucky where he built his large home known as “The Overlook” later renamed “Hollywood Hills” after himself! From here he monitored events occurring throughout centralTennessee including much battle testing taking place just outside Ofhis door! It should be noted that both Shelby & Grant were highly respected individuals within their respective communities even though they may have had very different ideologies!! When World War I began America entered into conflict once again becoming embroiled in European involvement becoming involved on all fronts!! On April 12th 1915 General John Sherman delivered an address from atop Mount Hood calling upon Americans across the nation to support our cause!!! This call set off waves of patriotism across America causing many people from small towns like LewisBURG not onlyto enlist but also provide goods & services needed by our military these days still remembered fondly by many residents today !! For locals like myself living right next door WWII commenced with Japanese bombers flying over our house dropping canisters filled with mentshane making us all scream!!! We didn't live through it however we experienced some bad times like being bombed multiple times total loss OF house & furniture happened whilst my father worked inside!) After World War II ended there were many changes taking place such as Redevelopment Authority coming around& developing downtown areas providing jobs for local farmers while also tearing down historic homes (& building new ones) creating more hope for future generations! In 1957 Alice Butler became first woman Mayor Of LewisBURG succeeding her predecessor Judge David Lipscomb who had been term limited!! With Alice now mayor things got really exciting starting out slowly with installing streetlights then gradually increasing electric lights thruout town beginning officially on July 1st 1958!!!!! Which brings me nicely onto my current topic…..Alice Butler Continued Service As Mayor THROUGHOUT THE YEARS 2010 THROWING DOWN THE GLASSES IN MEMORY OF HER HEROIN ADDICTED FEMALE CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020!!! By 2018 Alice had announced she would step down effective January 15th 2021 citing health concerns related TO A LIFE LONG CONFUSION WITH DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 100 Years Since Lady Butler Became Mayor InLewisburgh Tennesse
Binoculars were first invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French scientist. The binocular was an early form of camera obscura and is still used today for spotting movement in the dark. Binoculars have been used for centuries to see things that are too small to be seen with other forms of vision such as telescopes or microscopes. In 1838, George Stephenson developed the locomotive engine with help from his father and they named it after his fathers invention, the Stephenson Engine Company tender locomotive called Locomotion (1838). The first practical binoculars were made in 1851 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. They became known as Morse Binoculi because they could be worn on the nose like a spectacles. In 1865, Jean-Pierre Lacaille created a design for using two lenses on a single optic tube which gave rise to what is now called an telescope objective. This technology allowed Telescopes to magnification up to 25x! By 1850, there were over 10 million binocular sales around the world!
When binoculars were invented, they were only used for small distances. Early binoculars had a single lens that was mounted on the outside of the body and looked outwards. They were not very successful and only lasted for around 100 years.
Lewisburg was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson. The town became a state capital in 1819, and during the Civil War it played an important role as a military garrison. In 1865, Lewisburg was incorporated as a municipality. The population increased rapidly after World War II and in 1960 Lewisburg annexed the neighboring town of Mound City. Today, Lewisburg is the seat of government for the 5th congressional district and has a population of over 175,000 residents.
Lewisburg was founded in 1802 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. In 1825, Lewisburg became the county seat of Marshall County. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Tennessee and Kentucky Railroad in 1849, and by 1870, it had reached its current size. In 1907, Lewisburg was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant because of his role in helping to develop the town.
