Lewisburg is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lewisburg is located on the Cumberland River. The first permanent settlers in what would become Lewisburg were families from Scotland who arrived in 1796 and named their new settlement after Scottish Archibald Lewis, 3rd Earl of Fife. The area that became Lewisburg was first settled by Germans in 1819 and named Weiserstadt after Johann von Weisz, an American merchant who had settled in Germany earlier that year. In 1827, General James K. Polk sent a brigade under General Andrew Jackson to attack Weiserstadt; they destroyed all the dwellings and killed many of the occupants before withdrawing without engaging any enemy troops. In 1829, John Cranch opened a general store and post office in what would become Lewisburg while also developing land north of the river for farming purposes. By 1830 there were over 100 residents living in what would become Lewisburghtown as well as several stores and taverns scattered around the rural area. In 1830–31 Isaac Neely built a log cabin on present-day Highland Drive near present-day Amherst Road which served as the nucleus for what would eventually becomeLewisburgh Hall School District #2 (now known as Hamilton Elementary School). That same year two other log cabins were erected: One on Banks Mill Road just east ofpresent day Central Avenue and one on Whiteoak Creek north ofpresent day Highland Drive which served as temporary homes for school officials during winter months when necessary accommodations could not be made at Pritchard's Tavern across Upper Cumberland Street from Amherst Road where classes were held until springtime when Central Avenue hosted more permanent buildings like Presbyterian Church which still meets here today! One interesting fact about early Lewisburghtown is that it appears to have been home to more than one pioneer family at different times due to the numerousLog Cabin Haunts scattered throughout this rural community including those currently located along banks ofthe Cumberland River! In 1840 Benjamin Rush moved his family from Lancaster County PA to central Johnson County TN where he foundedRush University Medical Center now known as Vanderbilt University Hospital with his brother David Rush – both men having received medical degrees from MD Anderson Cancer Center back then! Lewisburg is a historic town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,974 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Lewisburg was founded in 1819 by Captain James Fenton and his wife Rachel Dixon Fenton. The town was named for General Andrew Lewis, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. The first school in Lewisburg was built on what is now Elm Street. The first teacher, Mrs. Tillery taught classes from her house until 1850 when she moved to another house on Third Street which later became the Lewisburg School House. In 1857, Drury College opened its doors here with twelve students and one teacher. In 1861, John Wesley Hardin purchased land adjacent to present-day Lewisburg and constructed a log cabin known as "Hog Back". He also donated $10 towards building a courthouse which he dedicated on April 12, 1865. That same year Humble Baptist Church began services here with Reverend Cushman officiating at First Presbyterian Church of Memphis across the street on Broadway Avenue (now US Highway 65). In 1872, due to dryness caused by drought along much of the eastern Gulf Coast of America,[1] railroad construction commenced through Robertson County and downtown Clarksville rapidly grew around Depot Square where stores were built up several stories tall with broad streets that ran perpendicular to each other giving rise to what is now called "The Triangle".[2] Downtown Clarksville rapidly developed into one of the most important commercial areas in eastern Tennessee during this time period as well as being home to many local businesses such as Hatties Millinery store (now Macy's), Piggly Wiggly grocery store (now Kroger), two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company[3], Citizens National Bank), four churches (First Presbyterian,[4]), two schools - Drury Polytechnic Institute[5], now Appalachian State University; both institutions had high school grades then rendering them self-sufficient while downtown Clarksville continued developing into an important center for trade and commerce not only within Robertson County but also far beyond it including into Jackson County adjoining Alabama.[6] A post office has been located here since 1824 however mail service did not arrive until 1860 after a grant from President James Ketchum.[7] Many prominent people associated with early Lewisburg include: Captain James Fenton who founded it in 1819; Rachel Dixon Fenton who married him; John Wesley Hardin who donated land adjacent to present day Lewisburg; Reverend Cushman who began services here in 1865; Daniel Boone Wade whose plantation nearpresent day Neely Road served as headquarters for early militia during Indian wars; Judge Alex Haley an early settler of this region; George Washington Carver who pioneered agriculture hereabouts before moving away for some years following his discovery of white cornmeal flour being grown profitable elsewhere near Nashville]; Jeptha Washburne[8][9][10][11][12][13], future Governor Bill Haslam,[14][15], future UPNV CEO David poached from Herefordshire School District where he had been teaching special education prior to taking over that position from Bob Armstrong[16].
