Lewisburg is located on the edge of the Smokies National Forest. The first permanent settler in Lewisburg was Captain James Hogg in 1820. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now known as Hogg Hill, about two miles northeast of present-day Lewisburg. In 1830, Major John Silloway came to live in Lewisburg and started an area forest fire that burned for days nearpresent-day downtown Lewisburg. In 1831, Nathan Bedford Forrest settled in what is now eastern Robertson County and began cultivating tobacco land east of present-day downtown Lewisburg. By 1835, Forrest had purchased all but one lot in downtown Lewisburg from Captain James Hogg for $100 cash. In 1840, he laid out a town square with a courthouse and jail on Withers Street between Third Street and Fourth Street; he named it "Forsyth". The first post office opened in Forsyth on December 12, 1840; it was moved to its current location on Main Street in 1945 by Colonel Semple Price (1823–1905) after he became president of the Knoxville Railway Company. Forsyth experienced some growth during Reconstruction: by 1870 there were twelve businesses operating within the center of town; by 1880 there were thirty-five businesses operating within one mile around downtown). However, much less activity took place outside of downtown until World War II when many local manufacturers produced military hardware or munitions products needed for America's war effort.
